La Paz is the highest capital city in the world, and Lake Titicaca is the highest inland lake of its size anywhere, so Bolivia is definitely worth a place on gap travel itineraries.

Combine a language school and homestay with a local family with a volunteering stint and then take a tour, or travel independently…and you have all the ingredients for a great sector of a gap year trip.

While in Bolivia on your gap travels, be sure to visit the floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca, where you can stay overnight (in very basic conditions) with the local people..a nice experience.
