North America
North America comprises just 3 countries, The USA, Canada and Mexico, but two of these are in the top five biggest countries in the world, so going there on a gap trip is very worthwhile as there is so much to see and do.
Many gap travel journeys begin with a flight to either the USA or Canada. Going west on a gap travel round-the-world trip is a very good idea, following the journey of the sun. Most Gap Travellers head to New York City first, then travel west to the Pacific Coast.

British passport holders heading to America on a gap travel programme can use the visa waiver programme, but recently the US government has implemented an additional security check which you must complete online at least 48 hours before your flight, so check with your gap travel provider or the US Embassy online first.
Canada does not require the online check, and does have a working holiday visa available, although there are more restrictions than Australia’s for gap travel.
A popular way to go for students planning a gap trip to the USA is to spend the summer working at a summer camp or as a waiter in a resort. There are several gap travel organisations who can help you arrange this in the UK.
Renting a car in the USA is easy and cheap if you are over 25 years old, but much harder if you are younger, so if you plan to drive across America on a gap travel trip, you may decide it is better to take a tour. Many gap travellers travel on adventure tours throughout the USA and Canada organised by Trek America. It is a great way to go, and a brilliant start to a gap year.
Gap Travel through Mexico is to be recommended too. There are some brilliant places to see in this large Spanish speaking country. A gap trip should include visits to Mexico City, Chichen-Itza, Guadalahara, Acapulco, Taxco and many other places along the way. Gap travellers often wish they had allowed more time to explore Mexico on their gap year as there is so much to see and do, so plan at least 3 weeks gapping there.
